There are also TONS of FREE effects pulgins and VST instruments out there now that weren't available just a few years ago that are unbelievable considering they are totally free including lots of cool synths. I previously had used a Tascam 8 track cassette machine (The non-MIDI version 488) I was leery of Cakewalk for nearly a decade, moving back to a hardware based system (Roland VS 880EX) BUT- then I tried Cakewalk Home Studio 2002 and I was REALLY impressed! I don't think you can go wrong with Cakewalk Home Studio 2004.

That said, I've had Cakewalk Products since I first tried to get into computer recording in the early 90's with Cakewalk Pro Audio 6- which absolutely sucked and was useless unless you had a REALLY kick ass computer at the time. The good news is that CHS handles ACIDized loops just fine and has much better MIDI implementation than ACID so you kinda get the best of all worlds. All of that was IMO more of a technical feat than a musical one.

I've programmed synths, edited MIDI and composed that way before but dropping some well chosen loops into a track and editing them, them adding my own performances over them has freed me up to concentrating on making MUSIC and writing songs, not worrying about if the drum groove isn't 'breathing' or whether that string patch sounds too 'synthy'. IMO Acid is the easiest thing I've ever used- I don't care what people think- I've spent WAYY too many hours programming drums and drum machines (Boss DR series, Roland MV-30, Roland TD-7 module, Yamaha QY series.) editing MIDI ghost notes and pushing for authentic 'feel' just to end up with what I thought was still a track that didn't quite get me there.
